Annotation

This study, redefining academic metadiscourse as either inter- or intra-textual, uses Relevance Theory to argue that metadiscourse at the semantic level may add to the propositional content of utterances and that metadiscourse at the pragmatic level is essential for an efficient interpretation of academic discourse.
