H. suggests that compositionality (the principle that the semantics of a complex expression is a function of the semantics of its constituents and their grammatical relations) is a constraint in the theory of speech acts. He also offers a survey of waysin which syntax and speech acts might be adjusted to conform to the compositionality constraint.
