This article offers an overview of the origins of the French tradition in pragmatics and provides a general survey of the work of Oswald Ducrot, one of the most famous French pragmaticists, comparing it to Gricean pragmatics and discussing the new lexical pragmatic framework that Deirdre Wilson and Robyn Carston developed within relevance theory.
