Annotation

This paper deals with language planning in two multilingual and multicultural Southern African countries, both former British colonies, Botswana and Malawi. In particular, it examines how Botswana and Malawi, where English dominates in official domains, and Setswana and Chichewa constitute the national languages, handle the call for the official recognition of more indigenous languages in specific fields such as government, education, and mass media.
