This paper argues that, notwithstanding important political and socio-economic changes, -considering as a case study the situation in Turkey, Belarus, and Uzbekistan-, local cultural values prevail over time, and cross-cultural studies in human behaviour, such as politeness, are only feasible if these cultural differences are taken into consideration.
