Annotation

This article employs Antonio Gramsci's hegemony theory to question the contribution of Doke's pioneering work on language treatment and language policy formulation in postcolonial Zimbabwe to Zimbabwean language politics. It is concluded that the contemporary Zimbabwean marginalisation of Ndebele cannot be completely comprehended without this Dokean legacy.
