He claims that strategies in linguistic action can be properly described in terms of a componential analysis of the speech act, dividing it into 4 subacts: the phonetic, the illocutionary, the referring, and the predicating. He discusses various aspects of this claim with respect to indirect speech acts, and with respect to interlanguage differences in strategies used in connection with these 4 subacts.
