This paper examines interlingual uncertainty in bi-and multilingual legislative texts. It identifies three sources of meaning gaps in bilingual and multilingual laws, and investigates how Canadian and Hong Kong courts and the European Court of Justice build meaning in such cases. The courts need to resolve linguistic uncertainties to be able to give a uniform interpretation as required by the law: this has its implications for legal language research, legal translation and pragmatics.
