Annotation

This paper examines the nature of the quasi-equivalent of irony in the Japanese language, namely hiniku, using examples from novels, newspaper and magazine articles , and compares it with English irony and sarcasm. Most hiniku examples appear to be consistent with the communicative insincerity theory.
