This analysis discusses the dialogue specific nature of the Japanese sentence-final particles ‘yo’ and ‘ne’, considers their different types of uses, some counterintuitive, and investigates the interaction between the sentence-final particles and utterance-final intonational patterns. This interaction is shown to offer Japanese speakers two complementary persuasion strategies.
