Annotation

Starting from Vološinov’s discussion of a dialectic between large-scale cultural-ideological formations and reported speech styles, this paper explores how represented speech can diagram, whilst being reciprocally ‘embedded’ by its sociohistorical context. This paper focuses on represented speech constructions in diasporic Tibetan Buddhist debate, in which monks subsume the animator's voice into the voice of tradition.
