Based on a video recorded Petalangan shamanic healing ritual practiced in Indonesia, this paper examines how ritual unintelligibility reconfigures the engagement of the participants: in this specific ritual it might even enhance their engagement by stimulating their imaginative interpretations of the ritual's meanings.
