This article discusses the threefold dilemma facing the translator of Egyptian cartoons into English. It adapts Attardo and Raskin's General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH 1991) to be applicable to the semiotic interpretation and translation of cartoons. Finally, the article considers employing the translation of cartoons as a contrastive methodology in the Arabic as a foreign language, the English as a foreign or second language, and in the translation and pragmatics classes.
