This paper discusses language policy changes in the three Baltic countries since the restoration of independence, their nature, the opposition they face and both the local and international linguistic, social and political impact of these policies. Attempts to re-install the national language are highlighted, with a particular focus on bilingual and multilingual language use in the Baltic multiethnic context.
