Drawing on discourse analysis and bringing in Brown & Levinson's notions of face and Goffman's participation framework, this article explores in detail how a balance is reached between rapport and instructional tasks in the moment-to-moment teacher–student classroom interaction of one ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) grammar class.
