This paper tries to fill in a folklore criticism gap by examining Arthur Waley's and Barbara Creed's English translations of Duan Chengshi's Chinese story of Ye Xian, in general conceived of as the precursor of the Western Cinderella story, exploring in particular the texts' feminist tensions.
