This study explores British English and Japanese politeness conceptualizations by measuring the semantic fields which arguably restrict speakers' expressive choices. Moreover, it discusses methodological issues in the handling of data that are relevant to research which tries to relate linguistic and cultural facts, and individual and cultural representations.
