This paper draws on data from two ethnographic studies, one concerning nurse–nurse and nurse–doctor communication in operating rooms, and one regarding work routines and communication methods in oncology wards. It is argued that clinical whiteboards have a hybrid role: communicating inter- and intraprofessional directives, arbitrating professional tensions, and soften potentially face-threatening acts.
