Annotation

This paper explores motivating factors behind the recent tendency to use the aku (instead of saya) form of first person pronoun in the Indonesian public sphere, whereas this was previously regarded as unacceptable. It is argued that the social expectation linked with aku is shifting, and that the aku and saya pronouns have to be considered as linguistic representations of personal and social self-categorizations.
