Exploring the nature and origins of mirth, considering Greimas' view concerning joke structure, research on neurobiology underlying humor appreciation, and a componential analysis of emotion, the paper examines the systemic/functional aspect of mirth, reasoning that mirth is produced by specific practices, typical of children when they are trying to fulfil tasks beyond their developmental level.
