This paper argues that the courtroom offers an ideal testing ground for exploring the link between High rising terminal intonation (HRTs) and the powerless language style they have been associated with by offering an environment including power differentials. Although HRTs appear to possess some association with power, they are more precisely defined in terms of discourse function, role and goals.
