On the pars-pro-toto principle, viz. the problem of how the specific features of verbal behavior depend upon the specific features of those situations within which people speak. The paper contains discussions of variation in the naming of objects, in the formulation of requests, and in the choice of 'quasi synonyms' from different sublanguages for naming objects. Empirical investigations on these topics are reported.
