Annotation

This book demonstrates how in the 19th century Habsburg Empire, in the wake of ongoing democratization, especially in 1848-1849 and after 1860, the non-German speaking communities tried to redefine their status by asking recognition of their languages and cultures, whilst German-dominated state nationalism attempted to reinstall its endangered authority by awarding linguistic and cultural autonomy to the different ethnic groups.
