Based on a large corpus of examples from English and German, this book explores misunderstandings from a pragmatically-oriented communication perspective. Three main types of misunderstandings are distinguished, and an analysis of the link between misunderstandings and nonunderstanding and unnoticed misunderstandings leads to the inference that one has to consider 'total' understanding as a social construct.
