Based on the exploration of 19th century emigrant 'ordinary' correspondence, this book pleads a dual shift in approaches towards language (history) research: on the one hand a greater interest in language use in broad ranks of the population, and on the other an emphasis on the socio-communicative basis of German as modern cultural idiom.
