This volume explores dialect levelling, or structural variation reduction with regard to an authentic rural Limburg dialect of Dutch. The approach combines quantitative sociolinguistic with historical linguistic and dialectologic methodologies and sketches the outlines of a dialect levelling theory. It also discusses possibilities and problems of an integrated study of language variation and change and formal linguistic theory.
