Through the analysis and description of the gradual appearance of specific current text-linguistic characteristics, referred to as "Parlando", in a historical corpus of essays, written during the Abitur examination over a period ranging from 1881-1991, it transpires that the "Parlando" text pattern can be interpreted as an index of socio-communicative language change in written texts.
