Challenging the traditional teleological perspective of language historiography, the contributions to this volume offer alternative histories of ten ‘big’ and ‘small’ Germanic languages and varieties in the last 300 years. The covered issues include language contact and choice, and language variation and change, considered within the framework of standardization of written and oral text genres and from the perspective of wider layers of the population.
