Annotation

This work examines the history and development of the childhood concept, deals with U.S. key media childhood depictions and investigates how parents employ various media forms to educate and entertain their children. It is argued that the stories which parents tell their children include the dominant culture's ideologies, which frequently promote (materialism as the way to) 'happiness', and especially obedience to the dominant order.
