Annotation

This book discusses and accounts for the complexities of identity, power, and discursive family practices that an urban African American -considered low income and low literate- mother and daughter engage with in their everyday life as they competently, critically, and strategically use language and literacy in their home and community environment. It examines why, despite these abilities, neither of them deems themselves as literate, and how this contradiction blocks the transformation of their literacy capital into social profit.
