This study in the philosophy of language deals with the semantics and pragmatics of self-reflexive metalanguage. Part I presents data on different components of our metalinguistic practices. Part II explores and refutes the four major metalinguistic theories, and present a new explanation of our usage of quotation in a range of different settings.
