Annotation

This book on gender and communication argues that within each gender, there is as much similarity and variation as between men and women, often related to social roles and relationships. It further addresses the impact of Darwinian theories of natural selection and the idea that girls and boys are socialized during childhood into different ways of language use, before considering the issue of "miscommunication" surrounding, for example, sex and consent to sex, and women's restricted success in work and politics. To conclude, it is stated that linguistic differences between the sexes are defined by the need to construct and project personal meaning and identity.
