Annotation
Drawing on (historical) linguistics, this study explores the origins of a range of major sound changes in English, and their interplay with social changes, in three transitional periods: first, when English emerged as a distinct language with regard to other West Germanic language varieties; secondly, during the transition from Old to Middle English; and thirdly, during the period when Middle English turned into Early Modern English.
