Annotation

This volume considers how the Russian language changed in the period between 1900 and the mid 1980s. After addressing changes in lexicon, syntax, morphology and pronunciation, it explores the linguistic impact of social change in chapters on orthography, speech etiquette, modes of address and the changing status of women. It also investigates to what extent the standard language conincides with the actual spoken and written language of educated Russians.
