Annotation

H. claims that it is possible to elaborate a theory of intonation which takes into account the fact that the intonation contour of a sentence cannot be predicted without knowing the context in which it occurs, without accepting Chomsky's own revision of his standard theory (i.e. without abandoning the belief that meaning can be completely determined by the deep structure of a sentence).
