This paper discusses how other-initiations of repair present a problem solving hierarchy: addressing problems as hearing problems before addressing them as understanding or acceptability problems. This preference hierarchy can also account for vague or ambiguous repair initiation, i.e. open class repair initiators such as e.g. “huh?”.
