This paper employs a corpus of letters, written during the period that Botswana was a British protectorate (1885–1966), to investigate the major differences and similarities between letter writing by and to the British administrators and by and to the Batswana. Letter writing in Setswana appears to require the use of greetings and address forms, representing respect and politeness in the Setswana culture.
