Annotation

This paper sets out to compare the behavior of a range of non-clause-bound types of indexical expression in English across three spoken and written texts from different genres. It focuses specifically on the deictic, anadeictic and anaphoric roles of the various indexicals as a function of text genre, speaker's intention and the interlocutive relationships developed throughout the discourse. The paper also assesses the neo-Gricean pragmatic account of discursive (non-) coreference, put forward in Levinson's (2000) 4Presumptive Meanings. The theory of Generalized Conversational Implicature'.
