Annotation
This article examines Bach's idea (Bach, 2000) that null appositives, intended as expanded qua-clauses, can resolve the puzzles of belief reports, which are crucial for the comprehension of the semantics and pragmatics of these reports. It is demonstrated that null appositives are required, in the case of belief reports, to account for some anaphoric effects, which would otherwise be mysterious. Examples show that null appositives are only necessitated at explicature level, in line with Carston's and Recanati's standard assumptions on pragmatic intrusion.
