This paper focuses on the observation that the two semantically and pragmatically close adverbs certainly and definitely have different preferences concerning their degree modifiers choice. Drawing on the notions of boundedness and scale as configurations (Paradis, 2008), the paper argues that the preferences of certainly and definitely for different degree modifiers can be accounted for from their semantic–pragmatic development. At the same time these collocations engender new meanings.
