Drawing on Kress and van Leeuwen's social semiotic analysis and Hallidayan linguistics, this study uses a multimodal analysis of child picture books in order to determine to what extent visual and verbal components create meaning. It is argued that the visual and the verbal interact to retain the children's interest and make the story plot accessible to them.
