This paper reports on a study that concerns the discourse functions of paragraph This comparison of episode and paragraph divisions in English narrative texts, indicates that the majority of paragraph divisions are used to mark the various kinds of thematic discontinuities associated with the prototypical episodes. They are employed less consistently but often in marking the thematic discontinuities linked to the subepisodes.
