Using domain mapping and blending theories of metaphor, this paper explores a well-known verse by Hafiz of Shiraz, in which life is conceptualized as a stream. It is concluded that the major function of metaphors consists in offering a shift from one frame to another, based on an emergent structure. The reader plays an active role in this shifting process.
