Although the cooperative principle (the organizing principle in Gricean pragmatics) has been under attack as people are not always or in general cooperative, and the proposed solution of distinguishing between types of cooperation is helpful but does not remove all concerns, it is argued that the principle, once qualified, can play an important continuing role in pragmatic theory.
