This paper on the pragmatic function of Malay 'yang', examines the use of yang in various regional dialects and from different developmental phases. Whilst in certain 19th century texts 'yang' has a clear pragmatic function, this function is absent in standardized 20th century varieties, yet resurfaces in contemporary prose.
