Using the cognitive theory of coherence relations (Sanders et al., 1992), this paper examines the acquisition order of coherence relations between discourse segments. The literature on child language supports two distinctions in the theory: Basic Operation and Polarity. Additionally collected data evaluate the validity of two other distinctions: Source of Coherence and Order of Coherence Relation. The findings confirm that cognitively complex coherence relations emerge later than cognitively simple relations.
