This article explores the usage, and in particular the way of and motivation for incorporation and the stylistic effects of French words and phrases in some English-medium newspaper articles covering the French November 2005 riots. It is found that the use of French here constitutes an efficient communicative tool, employed for reference clarity, evocation of specific associations, sarcasm and humour, and the achievement of an identifying or distancing effect.
