Annotation

This article explores how the ideological, social, and material conditions of linguistic studies in the early colonial encounter affected the 19th century descriptions of African languages and the delimitation of linguistic boundaries. The impact of these descriptions remained influential in African linguistics, for example in ethnolinguistic group identification, in grammatical descriptions' shape, and in orthography politics.
