Annotation

This paper argues that the early 20th century introduction of the Stammbaum model of linguistic relatedness in China, refigured the objects and methods of traditional Chinese philology. The historical Tang dynasty standard was reconstructed and re-imagined as a “mother language” for the Chinese dialects, also in an attempt of post-Imperial political authority and identity negotiation. The employed hybrid dialectology helped to define Chinese languages' boundaries.
