This paper argues that the playful construction of oppositional identities in family talk in bilingual and multigenerational Azerbaijani families, living in Tehran (Iran), relieves speakers from heir responsibility and engenders a safe setting for challenging otherwise severe social hierarchies. The multilayered study combines sequential with membership categorization analysis and ethnography.
